How to Start Your TrailMaster Go-Kart

GoKartMasters New Owner Academy

How to Start Your TrailMaster Go-Kart

TrailMaster starting controls vary by model. Some use a pull rope and manual choke, some use a dash choke and start button, and the 200/300 families use a keyed starter with a brake safety switch. Choose your exact model group below before cranking.

Before touching the starter

Check engine oilUse synthetic 10W-30. Never add oil to the gearbox.
Inspect the kartTest brakes, throttle and steering before starting.
Clear the rearKeep people, hair, clothing and objects away from moving parts.
Seat an adultHave someone ready to brake and shut the engine off immediately.

Important starter warning

Never hold an electric starter continuously for more than six seconds. If the engine does not start, release the key or button momentarily before trying again. Repeated long cranking can overheat and damage the starter.

Pull-start models

Mini XRS+ starting procedure

Also useful for: older Mini XRS models with the same toggle switch, recoil starter and engine-mounted choke.

  1. Engage the parking brake.
  2. Flip the toggle switch to ON.
  3. Turn the fuel valve under the tank so the lever is vertical—pointing up or down.
  4. Move the engine fuel valve toward the front of the kart.
  5. For a cold engine, move the choke lever toward the rear of the kart.
  6. Pull the recoil rope until the engine starts or tries to start. A normal warm start may take three or four pulls; the first start can take ten or more.
  7. Move the choke toward the middle as the engine begins running.
  8. Warm the engine for approximately one minute, longer in freezing weather, then move the choke fully forward to OFF.
  9. Move the parking-brake lever completely forward and confirm the brake is fully released.
  10. Fasten and tighten both seat belts before riding. Keep an unused passenger belt buckled.

Dash-choke models

Mini XRX+ and Mini XRX-R+ starting procedure

Also useful for: older Mini XRX and Mini XRX-R models with the same controls.

  1. Engage the parking brake. On reverse models, place the shifter in neutral.
  2. Turn the key to ON.
  3. Turn the tank fuel valve vertical and move the engine fuel valve toward the front of the kart.
  4. Pull the choke knob out and hold it out while starting. The knob can retract into the dash if released.
  5. Press the start button, or use the recoil rope. Do not run the electric starter for more than six seconds at a time.
  6. After the engine starts, push the choke halfway in while it warms.
  7. After approximately one minute, push the choke completely in.
  8. Move the parking-brake lever completely forward and confirm full release.
  9. Adjust the seat, then buckle and tighten both seat belts.

Mid-size models

Choose the Mid procedure by controls

Mid XRS

Discontinued pull-start model

  1. Engage the parking brake.
  2. Flip the toggle switch ON.
  3. Set both fuel valves ON: tank valve vertical and engine valve forward.
  4. Move the choke lever toward the rear.
  5. Pull the recoil starter until the engine starts.
  6. Move the choke toward the middle, warm for one minute, then move it fully forward.
  7. Move the parking-brake lever completely forward before riding.

Mid XRX and Mid XRX-R

Electric-start and pull-start backup

  1. Engage the parking brake and place reverse models in neutral.
  2. Turn the key ON.
  3. Set both fuel valves ON: tank valve vertical and engine valve forward.
  4. Pull and hold the dash choke knob out.
  5. Press the start button or use the recoil rope.
  6. Push the choke halfway in, warm for one minute, then push it completely in.
  7. Move the parking-brake lever completely forward before riding.

Keyed carbureted models

200, 300 and Blazer carbureted procedure

Applies to: 200 XRS, 200 XRX, 300 XRS, 300 XRX, Blazer 200R and Blazer 200X.

  1. Sit in the kart and confirm you can comfortably reach the brake, throttle and steering wheel.
  2. Place the transmission in neutral.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal to activate the starter safety switch.
  4. Turn the key one click to the ON position.
  5. Turn the key to the second notch and hold it until the engine starts—but never longer than six seconds.
  6. Gently pat the accelerator only if the engine needs help starting or staying running.
  7. If it does not start, release the key momentarily before trying again.
  8. When a cold carbureted engine needs extra choke, briefly cover the open end of the snorkel extending from the air-filter box with your hand while cranking. Remove your hand as soon as it starts.
  9. Let the engine warm for approximately one minute, longer in freezing weather.
  10. With the engine at idle and your foot firmly on the brake, select forward or reverse.
Blazer 200R owners: Although the Blazer 200R uses the Mid chassis, it uses the keyed 200-style starting system. Follow this procedure—not the Mid XRX start-button procedure.

Electronic fuel injection

200E and Blazer 200EX EFI procedure

Applies to: 200E XRS, 200E XRX and Blazer 200EX.

  1. Place the transmission in neutral.
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal to activate the safety switch.
  3. Turn the key one click to ON and pause momentarily so the electric fuel pump can prime the system.
  4. Turn the key to the second notch to engage the starter.
  5. Release the key when the engine starts. Never crank for more than six seconds.
  6. Pat the accelerator gently only if needed to help the engine start or remain running.
  7. If another attempt is necessary, release the key momentarily, return to ON, allow the pump to prime and try again.
  8. Let the engine warm for approximately one minute.
  9. Keep your foot firmly on the brake and the engine at idle when selecting forward or reverse.

Do not hand-choke an EFI model. EFI uses a computer, injector and sensors to manage its fuel mixture.

The engine turns over but will not start

Begin with the simple things. Most first-start problems are caused by fuel controls, choke position or battery charge—not a defective engine.

  1. Confirm there is fresh gasoline in the tank.
  2. On Mini and Mid models, verify both fuel valves are ON.
  3. Confirm the key or toggle switch is ON and the stop switch is not activated.
  4. Use full choke on a cold manual-choke engine. Hold the dash plunger out when applicable.
  5. On keyed models, verify neutral and press the brake firmly.
  6. If the starter turns slowly or clicks, charge the battery.
  7. On EFI models, pause in ON long enough for the pump to prime.
  8. Do not continue cranking repeatedly if you smell fuel strongly, see a leak or hear an abnormal mechanical noise.

GoKartMasters field notes

What surprises new owners

  • A brand-new pull-start kart may require ten or more pulls while fuel first reaches the carburetor. Normal starts usually take three or four.
  • The Mini and Mid dash choke must be physically held out during starting or it can slide back into the dash.
  • The Mini and Mid parking-brake latch can remain partially engaged. Move the lever completely forward before applying throttle.
  • A charged-looking battery can still lack enough power to operate the starter properly.
  • EFI may occasionally need a gentle pat of the gas on the first start, but it should not require continuous throttle to run.

Stop if something feels unsafe

Shut the engine off if the throttle does not return to idle, the kart begins moving unexpectedly, the brakes will not hold, fuel or brake fluid leaks, the steering binds, or you hear severe grinding or metal noises.

After the engine starts

Warm up, gear up and inspect before riding

Let the engine warm for approximately one minute. Then verify the parking brake is fully released, test the stop switch, buckle the seat belts and put on a helmet, goggles and closed-toe shoes.
