Find the Correct Drive Chain for Your Exact TrailMaster Model

Shop TrailMaster roller chains, lower and upper Mini chains, heavy-duty final-drive chains and matching master links. Chain pitch, width, length and link count can change with model, engine, reverse equipment and production generation, so begin with exact fitment instead of appearance.

Do Not Order a Chain by Width or Appearance Alone

Confirm chain size, model, engine and reverse equipment before ordering. Mini upper and lower chains are different. Reverse and non-reverse Minis use different final-drive arrangements. Older 5.5 HP and current 7 HP Minis can require different lower chains. A chain that is one pitch or a few links wrong will not become correct through adjustment.

Two-Stage Chain Drive

Mini XRS, Mini XRX and Mini XRX-R

Minis use an upper chain from the centrifugal clutch to a jackshaft or reverse gearbox, then a lower chain to the rear axle. The upper chain is 420-family roller chain, but lower-chain length changes with engine generation and reverse equipment.

Heavy-Duty 300 Drivetrain

300 XRS Versus 300 XRX

The 300 XRS drives a solid rear axle. The 300 XRX uses a heavy-duty chain to a center rear drive assembly that distributes power to separate rear axles. These rear drivetrains are not interchangeable.

GoKartMasters Chain Setup

Set Chain Slack to 1/4 to 1/2 Inch

With the engine off, measure total up-and-down movement near the middle of the chain's longest free span. The chain should move approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch. It should have very little slack, but it should never be pulled completely tight.

Too loose
Popping, jerking, loss of drive, repeated derailment or a chain that falls off.
Too tight
Binding, accelerated sprocket or bearing wear and unnecessary load on output shafts.
Misaligned
Uneven side wear, clicking, repeated derailment and rapid sprocket damage.
Dry or dirty
Rust, stiff links, noise and faster wear. Clean and lubricate before damage spreads.

Break-In and Routine Care

New Chains Stretch During the First Hours of Riding

First three hoursInspect chain slack about once each hour. Adjust and lubricate it as the new chain and drivetrain settle.
Five-hour serviceCheck tension, alignment, master link, sprockets and lubrication during the required first service.
Routine ridingInspect the chain regularly and any time the kart begins popping, jerking, losing drive or throwing the chain.
After washingAllow the chain to dry, then apply chain lubricant. Water and strong cleaner can remove the protective lubricant.
Check the sprocketsA new chain will wear quickly on badly hooked, damaged or misaligned sprocket teeth.
Carry a spare linkA correct master link and model-specific spare chain can save a family riding day.

Diagnose Before Replacing

What the Chain Symptom May Be Telling You

Symptom Check First Likely Direction
Chain keeps falling off Slack, sprocket alignment, bent mounts and damaged teeth Correct the cause before installing another chain.
Popping or jerking Excess slack, stiff links or sprocket wear Adjust to 1/4 to 1/2 inch and inspect every link and tooth.
Engine runs but kart will not move Parking brake, selected gear, chain, belt and clutch Do not assume the chain is the only possible failure.
One side of chain is polished Sprocket and axle alignment Side loading usually means the chain is not running in a straight line.
New chain becomes loose quickly Normal initial settling, adjuster movement and sprocket condition Recheck frequently during break-in, but investigate if adjustment will not hold.

Chain-Service Safety

Turn the engine off
Remove the key or disable the ignition before touching the chain.
Secure the machine
Chock the wheels and support the kart safely before lifting or rotating a wheel.
Keep fingers clear
Never place fingers between a chain and sprocket while rotating the drivetrain.
Reinstall every guard
Replace chain covers and guards before starting or riding.

TrailMaster Drive-Chain Questions

How much slack should a TrailMaster chain have?

Approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch of total up-and-down movement measured near the middle of the longest free chain span. The chain should not hang loose or be pulled completely tight.

Why does a Mini have an upper and lower chain?

The centrifugal clutch drives a jackshaft or reverse gearbox through the upper chain. A second lower chain transfers power from that intermediate shaft or gearbox to the rear axle.

Are all TrailMaster Mini chains the same?

No. Upper and lower positions differ, reverse changes the lower drivetrain, and the 5.5 HP and 7 HP generations can use different lower-chain lengths. Read the full fitment description.

Should I replace the sprockets with the chain?

Inspect them first. Replace badly hooked, broken or heavily worn sprockets because damaged teeth can quickly ruin a new chain.

Can I use a generic chain with the same pitch?

Pitch alone does not confirm fitment. Width, link count, strength, master link and model-specific length also matter. A ready-to-install exact-model chain avoids unnecessary cutting and guesswork.
