Go Karts for Kids Ages 11 and 12

Most eleven- and twelve-year-olds fit a TrailMaster Mid-Size go kart, but larger and more experienced riders may be ready for a Full-Size 200 model. Use rider fit, control and experience—not age alone—to make the decision.

Start With Rider Fit

Should an 11- or 12-Year-Old Ride a Mid or Full-Size Go Kart?

The Mid-Size remains the right choice when the rider fits comfortably and still has room to operate the steering wheel and pedals. A Full-Size kart may be appropriate for a larger, mature and experienced rider, but it should never be purchased simply so the child can grow into it.

Choose a Mid-Size When:

  • The rider fits the seat and harness correctly.
  • The child can fully press the accelerator and brake.
  • The steering wheel turns without contacting the rider’s knees.
  • Approximately 24 mph is enough performance for the riding area.
  • The child is still developing driving judgment and consistency.
  • You want a smaller, more manageable youth go kart.

Consider a Full-Size When:

  • The rider is physically cramped in a Mid-Size kart.
  • The driver can fully reach and strongly press the brake.
  • The rider has previous motorized-vehicle experience.
  • The child consistently demonstrates safe steering and braking.
  • The riding area is appropriate for a larger and faster kart.
  • An adult has personally confirmed that every control fits correctly.

Do not buy a Full-Size kart only for growing room. The rider must safely reach, steer, brake and remain correctly positioned on the very first ride.

Before You Order

Four Rider-Fit Checks

1. Pedal Reach

The rider should completely press both pedals without sliding forward or lifting away from the seat.

2. Braking Strength

Reaching the brake is not enough. The child must press it firmly enough to stop the kart consistently.

3. Steering Clearance

The steering wheel should turn completely without the rider’s knees blocking or contacting it.

4. Restraint Fit

The restraint must position the rider correctly without excessive looseness or poor strap placement.

Our Honest Advice

Which Size Should You Buy?

Choose the Mid XRX when price matters most and reverse is not necessary.

Choose the Mid XRX-R for reverse and a practical exterior with fewer plastic body pieces.

Choose the Blazer 200R when your child strongly prefers its colorful side-by-side appearance.

Move to a Full-Size model only when a Mid is physically too small and the rider has the experience and maturity to safely handle a larger kart.

Common Questions

Go Kart FAQs for Ages 11 and 12

What size go kart is best for an 11- or 12-year-old?

A Mid-Size is the best starting point for most riders in this age group. Consider Full-Size only after confirming physical fit, experience and maturity.

Do Mid-Size TrailMaster go karts have remote shut-off?

No. The Mid XRX, Mid XRX-R and Blazer 200R do not include a wireless remote shut-off.

Should I buy the larger kart so my child can grow into it?

No. A go kart should fit safely today. The rider must fully reach the pedals, steer without interference and remain correctly positioned.

Is age enough to determine whether a rider is ready?

No. Height, leg reach, strength, judgment, experience and the riding environment are all more useful than age alone.
